Red lights on. Bumping and barging heading into the first bend and eventually Lambert comes down. It will be all four back for the re-run. Red lights on once again as the re-run as stopped and again it will be all four back. Third time of asking they get away cleanly and Thompson powers away from gate three for a dominant win. It's a 3-3 position until mechanical troubles hit Lambert on lap three, and Grahn goes through to take third place. Jody Scott will take the R/R ride for the Bears in Heat 6.

Red lights on once again, unsatisfactory start. All four back for the re-run. Monarchs appear to have gated on a 5-1 with Castagna making it around the outside, but the two visiting riders seem to want the same line on turn three, and Allen slots inside Castagna for second place. No stopping Sedgmen who makes it two rides and two wins. Mulford will take the R/R ride for the Bears in Heat 8.

Good first lap battle. Thompson makes the start but Allen sneaks inside him off turn two. Grahn finds his way blocked on the back straight and Thompson then gets back inside Allen on the fourth bend. Another shared heat, Bears are four points up yet the Monarchs have had seven of the 11 race wins. Reserve switch for the Monarchs in Heat 12 as Loftus replaces Cluff.

Disaster for the Monarchs. Brilliant ride by Loftus on the first lap, three abreast going into the third bend and the Edinburgh rider makes it around the outside to lead. Scott chases strongly and dives inside Loftus heading into the third lap, with Loftus falling on turn one. Loftus is disqualified, and the race is awarded as a 5-1 to the Bears.

Klindt makes the start from gate two and just has the speed to cover off the Monarchs' attempted cutback off the second bend. Allen is kept at the back by Thomson so the gap remains eight points with two races remaining. There will be a tactical substitute for the Monarchs in Heat 14 with Thomson coming in to replace Loftus.

The meeting is still alive as the Monarchs hit back with a 5-1! Castagna with the start from gate two, and a fast ride by Thomson around the outside to take him to the front. It sets up a last heat decider with the Monarchs needing another 5-1 to snatch a draw.

It's a big finish from the Bears! Klindt makes the start from the inside and goes straight out to the dirt-line - he lifts on the exit of bend 2 and Thompson looks to come through, but crucially for the home side Scott has cut back superbly, and the two Redcar riders combine to squeeze Thompson out into turn three. It's a comfortable 5-1 from there as the Bears take a 49-41 victory.

Redcar is a popular track with visiting riders and can always be targeted as a possible away win. We were well in the hunt as we led 22-20 after seven heats. However over the remaining races it slipped away from us, and in spite of a heat 14 5-1 from Kye and Paco which set up a last race decider, we lost out to a home maximum in that one.

Team boss John Campbell said 'Nothing went right for us on the night. From Mitch's engine failing just before heat two, Jonatan not bing able to ride his number one all night due to. electrical problems, and refereeing decisions going against us particularly the Jordy decision in heat 12. Our riders tried so hard that they got in each other's way. Just not our night.

Ace Pijper was missing due to his SGP2 commitment, but Redcar have such strong reserves this is not a problem for them.

The opening heat was one of the best of the night, won by Jonatan Grahn with a bit to spare, but everyone was watching the other three riders who battled for all four laps. Dan could well have finished second, or fourth, but in the end it was a hard-won point.

The early stages were quite chaotic with riders making last minute changes of machinery, and a couple of heats stopped for what we were told were "technical problems", but we were gating well and more than holding our own. Sedgmen won heats three and seven with smooth starts, Dan took heat 5 and Kye thundered to victory in heat four.

Paco's point in heat seven got us that two point advantage but that was lost right away with a heat 8 1-5. Kye had another high-speed win in heat 9 but we weren't closing the gap.

Our reserves had been struggling but heat twelve looked as though it might be different! Jordy stormed ahead and led for a couple of laps (with Sedgmen at the back) until dive-bombed by Jody Scott. Jordy swung wide and came off beside the fence, and the chance was lost with a 5-1 awarded.

Heat 13 was shared behind Klindt which left us in a position to bring Kye in as a tac sub in heat 14, a Monarchs 5-1.

Klindt took his fourth race win in the last heat decider backed up by Jody Scott, and this time Dan and Kye could do nothing to stop them.

It is a busy weekend for Edinburgh Monarchs fans, officials and riders alike as they travel the length and breadth of the country with two fixtures in as many days that could well be crucial come seasons end.

Results elsewhere coupled with the home draw to Scunthorpe last time out have left the Monarchs playing catch-up a little in their playoff hunt and an improvement in away performances is required as they head first to Redcar on Friday night then onto Plymouth on Saturday evening looking to catapult back towards the top of the table.

It would be fair to say that scores away from Armadale have perhaps not been as expected so far with the excellent win at Glasgow the only time the Blue and Gold have held a home team to less than 50 points so far.

This needs to change and the first chance is Friday night on Teeside as the Monarchs take on the home Redcar Bears.

A big boost to the camp coming in the form of the return of captain Paco Castagna, the Italian now having come through a couple of meetings since returning form a thumb injury and looking to get back to business.

The Redcar circuit is no stranger to this Monarchs outfit as they have already visited the Ecco Arena this year going down 51-39 in the KO Cup on a night where conditions certainly weren't to anyone whether home or away's liking.

There were strong performances for Kye Thomson, Castagna and Jonatan Grahn and confidence can be taken from if these continue again that Dan Thomson and Justin Sedgmen will surely improve from the nine recorded between them and that will put the Monarchs in a strong position with reserve pairing Mitch Cluff and Jordy Loftus also looking to get involved in the point scoring.

While it is the delight of a full septet for the Monarchs there is one change to the normal line-up for the home men with Ace Pijper away on SGP2 qualifying duty. Rider replacement operates for the young Scot with Simon Lambert and strong reserve pairing Jake Mulford and Jody Scott able to deputise.

Elsewhere the Bears will be led by Nicolai Klindt with solid back-up from Jason Edwards and Jake Allen as they look to build on a good week having taken a home win and bonus point against the Oxford Cheetahs.

This a much needed boost after a trio of losses to start their league campaign which leaves them at the foot looking up currently.

After Friday it is the long trek down the M5 (376 miles door to door from Redcar to Plymouth) to take on the Gladiators on Saturday night.

The Devon men another who will fancy themselves as playoff contenders as they currently sit in 5th albeit only on points difference to the Monarchs.

It has been a strong start to the league campaign with home wins over Oxford and Scunthorpe and an away win at Workington to their name already.

Their can't be a more experienced heat leader duo in the league than Danny King and Scott Nicholls both seeming ageless as they continue to rack up the points and with Ben Barker named to ride after recent tumbles the top end of the Gladiators take some beating.

That is not to say the bottom end is any worse off as Anze Grmek looks to make his way in the UK after replacing the luckless Tobias Thomsen who suffered serious injury early in the season and 'well-kent face' Ben Whalley a recent introduction at number seven, the Monarchs Academy man yet to get of the mark at Championship level but showing his pedigree by passing Anders Rowe in his debut only for Rowe to get back in front of the Kiwi and hold on for the point.

Joe Thompson and Daniel Kilma perhaps are the key men in the Gladiators line-up with both capable of brilliance but also capable of off nights albeit coming into this one on the back of strong performances with Thompson in particular putting in the best night of his season as the Gladiators dispatched Oxford last weekend.

So, a pair of tricky looking fixtures for the Monarchs this weekend but matches in which the points can be accrued as a full and hopefully fit and fire head on the road a large Monarchs contingent expected on the terraces to cheer on the boys.
