"It's a long way to go to Birmingham on a Wednesday, especially to see your team score 29 points.

That was our meagre effort in our first completed match at Perry Barr, with no-one scoring more than 7 points.

The final score of 63-29 was a fair reflection of the gap between the teams.

We actually started with a 4-2 as Derek Sneddon won the opening heat. He gated in front with George Stancl, but George was passed by Henning Bager. This was the only defeat for Bager.

George found it hard to hold position all night, and ater that opening race there were no further race wins for Monarchs' riders.

Andrew Tully and 16 year old Joe Haines were the liveliest of the Monarchs, though in their case they were invariably fighting from the back.
