Some speedway riders are superstitious - and our German no. 1 Kevin Wolbert has realised that so far in 2011, after four team matches, his score has always matched the number of his jacket!

Riding for Monarchs at no. 1 last Friday, he scored 1 point. He has had three outings for Birmingham in the Elite League, riding at no. 7, at theoretically a much higher level of racing - and he has scored 7 points each time!

"I think this has meaning," he said. "I want to do well for the team so I would like to change my jacket for the match this Friday, and instead of no. 1 I will wear no. 15."

15 would be the most points Wolbert could score if he wins 5 races, and this is what he hopes will happen if the link between points and jacket number is maintained.

This may bring back memories of 1984, when Monarchs BURNT their no. 1 jacket in a ceremony at Powderhall after a number of riders were injured while wearing it. The injuries then ceased.

With Glasgow at Armadale this Friday, the Scotwaste Monarchs certainly want their top average rider at his best, so they will back his request to wear the special jacket.
