If all goes to plan Scotland is set to open it's latest Speedway track in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

The promoters hope to run eight consecutive Saturday evening meetings in 2014 starting from the end of June. If the project is successful then an application is to be made to enter a team into the Premier League, which is the second level of competitive racing in Britain, in 2015. Objections from current promoters are unlikely to succeed, a British Speedway Promoters Association insider said, as the proposed 353 metre track, which is less than a ten minute drive from the centre of Inverness, is 170 miles from the nearest track and 215 miles from the closest Saturday operation.

A spokesman for the new promoting consortium said: “ This is an exciting time for sport in the North of Scotland. Up until now it has been between football and shinty. Motor sport is something new to the area and we believe that the local people will embrace Speedway with open arms when they realise that it is a family sport for all ages.” Asked about the proposed team and name, he continued, “We will ask the fans to come up with a suitable name for the team but already we like the sound of the Inverness Monsters. Our signings will come from riders who have been unable so far to find a team place this year at other clubs”
