Two long-term Edinburgh enthusiasts have teamed up to organise a fundraiser for the Border Roofing Monarchs in the wake of their suffering at the hands of the weather so far this season.

Scott Wilson (presenter since 1997) and Derek Wilkinson (of Monarchs’ official transport supplier Duddingston Private Hire) are launching Monarchs 100, inviting up to 100 Monarchs’ fans to walk the Forth Road Bridge on Sunday August 28th.

Scott said “If all of those 100 people can raise an average of £100 each then we’ll be able to pour £10,000 into the Club’s coffers which should ensure, along with the efforts of the Monarchs Fans Trust, that we will have a team to support in the future. Duddingston Private Hire will provide courtesy transport to and from the Bridge and there’ll also be a wee lunch involved too courtesy of Donald at The Black Bull in Mid Calder.”

There will be subsidised transport later to the Newcastle v Monarchs match that evening, and if that’s not enough Duddingston Private Hire are also taking over as sponsors of the weekly Monarch of the Match. Derek Wilkinson said “I want to sponsor it but I don’t want to stop anyone else coming in, so if anyone wants to take a week maybe for a birthday or some celebration, I will step aside for that week.”

There has been no official alarm-raising by the Monarchs’ Promotion after five rain-offs plus several other rain-spoilt events, but it is understood that the outstandingly successful Monarchs’ Fans Trust will also be getting involved in giving assistance. Little wonder Monarchs are proud of their fans.

A Facebook page has been set up for Monarchs 100.
