Edinburgh Monarchs Academy
Stellar Monarchs Academy finished their season on a high running out 2 point winners over the Belle Vue Colts at the National Speedway Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Plaudits will go to Jordy Loftus for a crucial five points between heats 14 and 15 but team boss Scott Wilson was quick to praise his entire one to seven as he said after, "I'm really pleased today, with the result first and foremost but also the performance of the whole team. We needed everybody to do their bit today and all seven contributed to the win.
"We built a good lead over the middle portion of the meeting, which we needed in the end as Belle Vue pushed us all the way, but we held our nerve to get over the line.
"Our reserves were going to be crucial and both delivered today. For Mark to come back after such a long break and score paid 8 was excellent and Lee lead two Championship calibre riders for three-and-a-half laps in heat 4. He took real confidence from that and finished with a good score.
"It's a nice way to end the season. We finish just one point short of top spot which tells the story of how well the team have done."
As mentioned by Wilson it was a strong middle portion of the meeting that gave the platform for victory as heat advantages in heats three, five and seven meant it was a six point advantage for the Academy at the halfway mark.
The hosts would come back into the it the rest of the way led by an immaculate maximum for their number one Will Cairns and with Harry Fletcher giving a punch at reserve as he raced to 11 also it was always going to be tight to the finish.
Heat 14 would prove pivotal with Loftus and Fletcher passing and re-passing almost every corner it felt like with the former finally fending off the Colt to mean a four point lead was taken into the last.
There would be further drama in this one as Cairns raced away for an untroubled win both sides had their misfortune, first up Academy guest Vinnie Foord would grind to a halt before making it to the first bend, home man Jack Kingston would then come down at the end of lap two and while he remounted this took the pressure of Loftus who knew he just had to remain upright to bring home the points for his side, a task completed with no drama.
So, a strong end to a encouraging season and the potential for a second place finish pending results elsewhere.
